Marie Kondo is a Japanese expert in organizing spaces. Her decluttering rule has made her famous all over the world, making her become the icon of all the dreamy closets that we would love to have. In these days, when there is too much time to devote to those activities that we always postpone, rearranging our wardrobe is a pastime as perfect as useful. We have chosen to marry the Kondo’s philosophy and guide you in organizing what will transform your wardrobe into a perfect minimal-chic oasis.
Do you all remember the Sex and The City scene where Carrie chooses her home based on the walk-in closet right? Here, even if you do not own an attic in the heart of Manhattan, we can guarantee you that by following 5 simple rules, your wardrobe will have nothing to envy to the most saved of Instagram!
- EMPTY YOUR CLOSET
The first step is to arm yourself with lots of patience and completely empty wardrobes and walk-in closets. With this system it will be much easier to notice duplicates, badly reduced and unused (or never used) clothing.
2. DECLUTTERING
Let’s start from the foundations: the decluttering rule. This rule is to do an important skimming of everything in your wardrobe. In fact, decluttering and organization are the two main phases and fundamental principles to be followed to obtain the perfect wardrobe. Start the Decluttering by dividing the objects in your closet according to categories: socks, shirts, underwear, vests, dresses, coats, jackets and so on! If you need some help, there are many baskets or boxes on the market with the names of the various garments, this will help you arrange them in categories and find them as needed.
3. KEEP ONLY WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY
Be honest, how many of you have clothes in your closet to put on when you finally lose those extra kilograms or change your hair color? Well, everything that falls into this category is to be CUT. Get rid of anything you don’t wear or have never worn, sell them or give them away so that you will have more space to add new items to your wardrobe when the occasion arises. Keep only what you like, that makes you feel beautiful and that you would wear on every occasion, no maybe, no but.
4. HAVE RESPECT FOR YOUR CLOTHES
Marie Kondo compares clothes to feelings, would you ever put your feelings piled up disorderly on hangers intertwined with each other? The answer is no! So if you have any regrets in the decluttering phase, follow this philosophy and learn the art of folding and arranging each garment on one hanger, dividing the spaces according to the famous category rule. No matter, in fact, how expensive and luxury a dress is, each of them is your armor to face everyday life, don’t let them be wrinkled or ruined!
5. DON’T BE NOSTALGIC!
“Not this one because grandma gave it to me for communion, this I stole from my ex-boyfriend, this was from my best friend and blah blah blah!” Memories are not worn, so they have no reason to take up space in your wardrobe. Get rid of those you can do without (or return them to the sender if necessary), if instead of some you just can not do without, put them in the box of memories (we all have it?) And do not let them occupy useless space in the closet.
Another tip that many follow, besides dividing the clothes by category, is to divide them by color. If you are an esthete then well maybe this is the next level for you, but be careful: putting things in color order every time you use them could be difficult and annoying…try it! Rely on the division into categories and cut, cut, cut as much as possible!
