If there is a common thread that unites all of our recent holidays, this has a name and it is Bridgerton! This winter’s Netflix obsession, the series inspired by the world of high society at the time of the English regency of the 1800s, kept thousands of spectators glued to the screen by winning hands down the series title this Christmas 2020. Well, let’s say that with the historical moment that we are going through a series so we really deserved it, and the events of the characters, now at the end of the first season, are already making us dream of the evolution of the second which, spoilers, seems to have been confirmed!

Produced by Shonda Rhimes (yes she is, the writer of Grey’s Anatomy) Bridgerton debuted last December 25th and was more than a pleasant discovery. The series tells the story of the Bridgerton family: Violet, Lady Bridgerton; her four children Anthony, Benedict, Colin and Gregory and her four daughters Daphne, Eloise, Francesca and Hyacinth. Their lives intersect with those of other aristocratic families such as the Featherington, whose choices are opposed to those of the leading family on one of the hottest issues of the time: the search for a husband by young women from the English capital.

In the style of the beloved Gossip Girl, to tell the stories of these young women there is an anonymous writer, Lady Whistledown, whose identity no one knows and who keeps their secrets and without too much delay puts them every day in black and white on what is the most loved comic in high society, of which, moreover, the feared English queen is also passionate about. But let’s get to the point! The plot is compelling, it presents the lives of the women of the time in a mix between historical novel and gossip, addressing not only light issues that the adolescents of the time had in common but placing the accent on the struggle for female independence that began in those years in England.

Yes, we already see you there with heart-shaped eyes and … how to blame you! Simon, for friends and for all the imaginary girlfriends like us that he has collected in less than a month, is the Duke and the most coveted bachelor of London and his life will be bound forever with that of the protagonist Daphne Bridgerton. Begun as a subterfuge to the rules that require girls to find a husband within a certain age, the relationship between the two will become a beautiful love story that aroused the curiosity (and envy) of all the spectators. Their story will address not only the pinker side of love but also modern themes such as the choice of not wanting to have children and the importance of sexuality in a couple. His difficult and ego-related character will have to deal with the revolutionary and independent nature of Daphne, who becomes the ambassador of all women of our millennium. In short, there are many reasons to fall in love with Bridgerton if you have not yet binge eaten it, but if you are not yet convinced, well, know that even just the vision of the Duke is a motivation that, as they say these days, seems to be MORE THAN PROVEN!
