In recent years, films addressing LGBTQIA+ issues have played an important role in raising awareness of the importance of inclusion and diversity in society. “Brokeback Mountain,” directed by Ang Lee, “Moonlight,” winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2017, “Carol” starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name,” and many other films, are just a few examples of films that provide an opportunity to open up dialogue about the LGBTQIA+ community and issues such as love, sexuality, and gender identity, allowing these issues to be treated with greater respect and sensitivity.

“Stranizza d’amuri” is a film directed by Giuseppe Fiorello, set entirely in Sicily in the summer of 1982, during the World Cup that Italy won in Spain. The plot follows the life of Gianni (played by Samuele Segreto), a young gay boy who is constantly bullied in his village. The only person he can count on is his mother Lina (played by Simona Malato), although he often has to clash with his partner Franco (played by Enrico Roccaforte), owner of the garage where the young man works. Gianni’s life changes when he accidentally meets Nino (played by Gabriele Pizzurro), a 16-year-old boy with whom a great friendship develops after an accident in which they are both involved while riding their mopeds. Soon, the boys fall in love with each other, but are forced to keep their love a secret for fear of discrimination.

“Close” also follows a similar story to the previous one. Here the main characters are two 13-year-olds, Léo and Rémi (played by Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele respectively), who have been close friends for a long time and openly show genuine affection for each other. One day, one of their peers asks if they are a couple, suspecting something because of their close friendship. Hence Léo begins to avoid his friend, fearing that their friendship may be misinterpreted. Rémi, extremely hurt, cannot understand the real reason for his best friend’s change in attitude.
