We will remember last year’s Cannes Film Festival for films in competition such as “Elvis,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Triangle of Sadness,” the latter of which was awarded the coveted Palme d’Or. In addition, other awards were presented to films such as “Close,” which was nominated for best foreign film at the last Academy Awards.
Also this year, the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival already seems to promise to be a success, boasting a respectable programming. Indeed, many beloved actors, directors and authors in the film world will descend on the Croisette in Cannes to present their latest works, some of them world premieres. But many of you may be wondering when the eagerly awaited event will take place. The 76th Cannes Film Festival will be held May 16-27 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, the historic festival venue on the French Riviera.
Who is on the jury of this year’s Cannes Film Festival?
Ruben Östlund, the Swedish director who has won the Palme d’Or twice, with 2017’s “The Square” and last year’s “Triangle of Sadness,” has been chosen as president of the jury, and he said he is delighted and honored.
What films will be screened at Cannes?
Every year at the Cannes Film Festival, films in competition and those in the Un Certain Regard category, dedicated to emerging filmmakers, will be screened. There will also be out-of-competition premieres, special screenings and many other activities. The festival will open with the world premiere of “Jeanne du Barry,” the historical drama by French director and actress Maïwenn, at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. In the film, Johnny Depp will play the role of King Louis XV and Maïwenn will be the maîtresse-en-titre. In addition, the festival will pay tribute to iconic actor Harrison Ford for his career. Outside of the competition, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Pedro Almodóvar’s new short film, Strange Way of Life, will be screened.
