During the last fashion weeks around the world, we could see how ties, commonly associated with men, are instead loved by many women who also wear them as an elegant and glamorous accessory. This trend of ties for women has indeed paraded down the catwalk as well as invaded the streets of fashion cities. We have been able to admire how – during street style – celebrities, influencers and techies have chosen to interpret this fashion trend.
Where do ties originate?
The history of ties has its roots in antiquity, with possible origins in ancient China. It is said that as early as the third century BC, Chinese emperors wore coloured silk bands around their necks, which had both a decorative and protective function against the cold. Later, this practice was adopted by Persian merchants, who brought this fashion to Europe during their commercial travels in the 17th century.
It was in this context that the modern tie, as we know it today, took shape in France. In the 17th century, Croatian soldiers, allies of the French, wore a silk sash as part of their uniform, around their necks. This practice became very popular among French nobles and was soon adopted as a men’s fashion accessory.

In recent years, the women’s tie trend has become increasingly popular. Many women are adopting this trend to experiment with new looks and show a particular interest in genderless fashion. Ties are available in a wide range of styles, colours and materials, allowing women to customise their look in creative and unique ways.
Women’s ties are a versatile choice as they can be worn in various ways depending on the style and occasion. For example, a thin tie can be tied in a simple knot around the neck for a minimalist and professional look, while a wide tie can be knotted more elaborately for a bold and sophisticated look.
