Today we are going to tell you about one of the hottest trends for next Spring/Summer 2023. Free The Nipple trend is actually a movement against the censorship of the female nipple, a real attempt adopted in recent years – especially by the fashion system – to avoid the continuous sexualisation of the female body. Thus, especially through transparencies, the fashion world is proposing more and more daring looks (considered inappropriate by many) as a clear expression of women’s emancipation – as it represents a vindication of women’s right to dress as they please and to be free to show their bodies. It is almost a path towards gender equality and freedom of choice.
Over the years, fashion has played an important role in the affirmation of female identity, in the representation of the aforementioned freedom and women’s autonomy. Since the suffragist movement, between the 19th and 20th century, women started to adopt more comfortable and practical clothes, such as trousers, to express strength and determination in fighting for their rights.

Today, however, once again, fashion – with the Spring/Summer 2023 collections – continues to narrate the attack on bodily autonomy. It does so by bringing to the catwalk looks with a see-through effect, more see-through in fact, as a celebration of the woman’s body. From Rick Owens to Massimo Giorgetti for MSGM, Ludovic de Saint Sernin and Giambattista Valli, many are the designers who have reinterpreted that movement called Free The Nipple, born in the wake of the film of the same name by Lina Esco in 2013.
But beware, the 2023 version is made of luxurious transparent fabrics such as tulle and mesh, adhering to the body and leaving very little room for imagination.
