Today ends the most anticipated New York Fashion Week of these last years. What’s the reason? This year, the big apple’s fashion week saw the affirmation of a great trend before than any others: change. A change that is for sure not unexpected since Tom Ford, the new president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America to replace the iconic Diane Von Furstenberg, announced that Fashion Week would have had a new face and mood.
Let’s start saying that the timing is shorter; following the new standards of fashion that want the fashion week shorter and more gender-fluid, the New York one has been the first to last less than 6 days, precisely from the 6th to the 11th of September. The calendar has been reduced and the fashion shows were less, giving importance, maybe for the first time after years, the most American side of fashion. Among the big names, the unmissable Ralph Lauren who had his see-now-buy-now show the 7th of September, Tommy Hilfiger, again with her winning partner Zendaya, Proenza Schouler, obviously Tom Ford and to see it out in style Marc Jacobs.
If we wanted to sum up what, specifically, were the big trends presented in New York, we could start by saying that the Scandinavian influence made itself undoubtedly felt. The sophisticated looks shot in the Copenhagen or Oslo street-styles were recalled in a Yankee version, as well as their researched materials and colour palettes. Talking about the mood, next summer will breathe a definitely ‘80s air, leading the femininity of yesteryear to the triumph: squared straps and oversized but also ruffled and pinny dresses. It’s strong femininity by the way, not the shy one of the ‘50s but a rock one that is sometimes impudent, that doesn’t dare too much but either hide.
