The fifth season of the acclaimed Netflix original TV series, The Crown, focuses mainly on Princess Diana‘s role during and after her divorce with the then Prince of Wales – now King Charles III.
Set in the 1990s, this season of the series dedicated to the most famous Royal Family of all time deals with the period when, due to various scandals, she began to lose favour with the public. As always, however, it is the countless costumes appearing in the show that prevail and complete this royal drama.
The great credibility of this season of The Crown is in fact mainly due to the meticulous work of reconstructing the look of each character. Emmy-winning costume designer Amy Roberts did a lot of preparation, studying all the footage and photographs of the time to recreate the outfits of the royal family at that precise moment in history. Of all of them, one of the most drastic changes – especially in terms of image – concerns Diana Spencer, the much-loved People’s PrincessPeople’s Princess. Playing this role is no longer the talented Emma Corrin, but the Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki, who has already appeared in such film successes as The Great Gatsby, The Tale and Tenet.
There were very few moments in which the costumes of the Princess of Wales were meticulously accurate, as in the case of the famous revenge dress, while others left much more room for the creativity of the costume designer, who was able to play and interpret Lady D’s imagination. The account of all other private moments, which mainly belong to Kensington Palace, gives the viewer a much more authentic and private view of Diana. During the 1990s Diana changed her style a lot, indulging in more sporty looks perfectly represented by sweatshirts, jeans, trainers, dark sunglasses and colourful blazer jackets.
This new season of The Crown brings out one of the most beloved members of the entire Royal Family ever. Lady Diana was in those years able to best represent that ideal of newfound freedom, a status often atypical for women of that time and rank.
We have thus selected some of the looks featured in the series, from versions that are very similar to the originals to those that are simply inspired. Which of the looks do you love the most?
