‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ becomes one of the most successful films of recent years

Avatar: The Way of Water is the sequel to the hit film Avatar, released in 2009 and directed by renowned director James Cameron. Announced shortly after the release of the first film, the second film in the successful saga sees the light of day after several years of waiting, and is now finally available in cinemas worldwide.

The Plot

We return to explore the magical world of Pandora with the protagonists as always. How can we forget the events of the first film, in which the protagonist Jake Sully, a paralysed former marine, joins an exploration programme on a distant planet populated by the imaginary indigenous Na’vi species. In the first film, Jake falls in love with Neytiri, a Na’vi, and joins the Na’vi’s struggle against the humans who seek to exploit the planet’s resources. In the second, we will see Jake happily living his life together with Neytiri but Pandora still seems to be hiding numerous mysteries.

In Avatar: The Way of Water we find the original cast and many famous actors, including: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Trinity Bliss and Jamie Flatters.

Director Cameron has stated how this sequel is even more ambitious than the first film, a reality in the spasmodic search for new cultures and new worlds on Pandora. Shot with cutting-edge technology to provide an even more realistic immersive experience, it was almost a foregone conclusion that this film would be a huge success both at the box office and with critics.

Thus Avatar: The Way of Water is now on the list of the most successful films of all time, just four weeks after its release. So far it has grossed almost $2 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing Jurassic World this weekend.

Only films such as Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as Endgame and, of course, the first Avatar, remain unbeatable and record-breaking box-office successes.

The Way of Water, despite being officially released in December, ranks as the highest-grossing film of 2022, ahead of Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion, the only other films to have grossed more than $1 billion last year.

This film is also considered one of the most expensive ever made, with a production budget estimated at between $350 million and $460 million.

But this does not seem to be the last film in the Avatar saga, in fact the director has already announced the release of more films in the next 7 years.
