For thousands of years these objects were mainly used to provide light and warmth, but today they have become an indispensable furnishing accessory that we are very fond of: we are talking about candles. Their origin dates back to ancient Egypt, when they were used to illuminate tombs, while the Romans started making them around 500 BC. In China, during the Han dynasty, candles were used to light Buddhist temples and were made from beeswax.
Over the years, after the advent of illumination, candles were used less and less. Today, however, we cannot do without this object that has undergone many changes. We use candles for decorative purposes, to create atmosphere or – speaking of scented ones – to create a cosy atmosphere.
Today, these candles come in a wide range, from the most to the least expensive, with different scents and aromas, from spicy to floral fragrances. Scented candles can be made using different types of wax: beeswax, vegetable wax and the latest – undoubtedly more sustainable – soy wax. In fact, soy candles, besides being biodegradable, do not contain harmful chemicals.
Thus, with the perfect combination of essential oils and wax, unique products are created to keep rooms fresh and relaxing. Of all those we know, however, it is the luxurious candles that win us over, those created with the highest quality materials and ingredients. Certainly more expensive than the standard ones, these candles can also become true design objects. It is no coincidence that we have chosen to include some of the best in our gallery. First among them – perhaps overpriced – is Guerlain‘s limited edition La Grande Bougie Parfumée. The Encens d’Hiver fragrance has an irresistible charm, wafting through the air in a comforting trail much like incense. This candle guarantees a 150-hour olfactory diffusion of woody notes.
