Lizzo: the evolution and success of a new generation artist

Lizzo, the artist of major musical hits including Good as Hell, Truth Hurts and Juice, is one of the most loved by the new generation and beyond. Her first major label album, Cuz I Love You, entered the Billboard Top Ten in 2019. However, her career began a few years earlier, when the singer performed for a few bands. Melissa Viviane Jefferson aka Lizzo was born in Detroit in 1988. Hers is an extremely religious family, and it is no coincidence that gospel music will be very present throughout the singer’s childhood. One of the most interesting curiosities concerns her stage name, the perfect combination of her childhood nickname (Lissa) and an homage to the famous Jay-Z song entitled Izzo. Before making her mark as a soloist, between rap and pop, she was on her way to becoming an orchestral flutist and planned to study at the Paris Conservatory.
