Laverne Cox, four-time Emmy nominee and winner, the first transgender African-American to get a starring role in a television series, fully embodies the values of the Tribute collection – also thanks to the work of activism with which he has always made his voice heard for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
In full Laverne Cox style, the set dedicated to her includes a red tulle dress, red carpet boots and a sparkling silver suit. To complete the look there are silver earrings and glamorous make-up and fold in Hollywood style. The choice of Mattel continues the path taken by the company with particular attention to diversity and inclusion, giving the possibility to everyone to feel represented.
To celebrate Laverne’s 50th birthday, Barbie will make a donation on her behalf to TransFamilySOS, a non-profit association very close to Laverne and the transgender community that aims to create welcoming spaces throughout the United States, also ensuring health insurance and psychological support.
“We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate award-winning actress, producer, writer, and LGBTQ + rights opener Laverne Cox with a doll,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, Mattel. “We are proud to emphasize the importance of inclusion and acceptance at all ages and to recognize the significant impact of Laverne on culture with a Barbie Tribute Collection”.
“It has been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my doll,” said Laverne Cox. “I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on the shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled on a transgender person to their collection. I hope that people can look at this Barbie and dream big like I did in my career. The space of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source and leads you to achieve more than you initially thought was possible”.
