Everyone’s talking about it, it’s the documentary of the moment, and she’s former Instagram sensation, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me is about to come close to a streaming record. Certainly the two-month free trial promo that Apple TV+ has made available just for this launch has made the games easier, but the documentary directed by Alek Keshishian is an unprecedented journey inside the singer’s most emotional sphere. There you will find candid accounts of her bipolar disorder, her songwriting process, her difficult childhood (Selena’s mother was still in high school when she gave birth to her), and even her relationship with baby boy prodigy Justin Bieber. During promotion interviews, Selena continued to open up until she released a statement that thundered all over social media: that Taylor Swift is her “only friend” in show business.
Selena Gomez’s controversial statement appeared in an interview with Rolling Stone and added, “I never felt part of the cool girls who were celebrities. My only friend in the industry is Taylor (Swift), I remember feeling out of place.”
That’s all it took to set in motion a domino effect of statements, for example that of another industry friend: “Grown-ish” actress Francia Raisa, who donated a kidney to Gomez in 2017. The day after the documentary aired, Raisa commented with an “interesting” comment on E! News’ Instagram post featuring quotes from Gomez. Comment that was then quickly deleted but anticipated an unfollow on social media.
Some fans were quick to point out that Gomez may have been referring to the music industry, while Raisa is an ‘actress-so there are best friends by industry Raisa, don’t feel bad. Gomez herself entered the conversation just Sunday, commenting “I’m sorry I didn’t mention all the people I know” in a video on TikTok discussing Raisa’s unfollowing. His comment provoked a negative reaction from fans. “All the people I know, how about the one person who gave you part of her body? Do you think that name might be on the tip of your tongue?” one person wrote on Reddit.
