The times when fashion’s purpose was to simply make people look good are over. Art for art? Nice, but from now on you will need to go to a museum to enjoy this philosophy. Because in the streets of the fashion capitals, fashionistas are spreading a whole new fashion attitude: they go political. Sure, style is still important when it comes to choose our outfit, but it’s the message we set down with it that more and more becomes the determining factor.
WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS
This season, the kick-off to wearing explicit political messages goes back to Dior’s Spring Summer 2017 show, where Maria Grazia Chiuri was enthusiastically clapped for her WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS- statement Tee. The quote that Dior took from the writer Chimanda Ngozi Adichie became the most instagrammed look of the previous Paris fashion week and apparently got the ball rolling in the fashion world.
DIO(R)EVOLUTION
Shirts with political and above all with feminist slogans have instantly been sold by Easy and Asos like hotcakes; and yes, they have made a huge appearance again in the recent fashion shows. How come? Well, when women on protest marches and models on catwalks are wearing the same Tees, there is a special thing going on. In fact, it makes all women remember who they are, who the should be and who they could be if they raised up for the same purpose.
WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED
Instagram is overflooded with influencers posting themselves in those new statement shirts. Chiara Ferragni was one one of the first ones going public with Dior’s WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS shirt, followed by Rihanna or Natalie Portman, the latter at at the Los Angeles Women’s March in LA. The trend still grows bigger and bigger: Instagram is filled with selfies of the whole fashion lot wearing the DIO(R)EVOLUTION-Shirt, Bella Hadid just rocked the catwalk at Prabal Gurung’s New York show with a shirt showing a THE FUTURE IS FEMALE print (a quote from 1970s radical feminist history: this tee was originally created for Labyris Books, the first women bookstore in New York and Cara Delevigne made it famous again a couple of years ago, when she wore the same tee designed by OtherWild)— and Labels like Zadig et Voltaire get into the act with GIRLS CAN DO ANYTHING -tees.
THE FUTURE IS FEMALE
Seems like the faux-manifestation show that Karl Lagerfeld staged in 2014 with Cara Delevingne marching in the front row finally became reality. The difference is that girls are not holding up protest messages on placards, they are wearing them. Scroll down to see for yourself: this is how good political fashion can look.
