The world of fashion, as we know, is constantly evolving but often seems to love the return of trends considered obsolete, ready to impose themselves again among celebrities and fashion victims. Not only clothing and footwear with retro allure and particular shapes, there are many accessories used and inspired by past eras that are destined to come back into fashion. During the Paris Haute Couture shows for the Spring/Summer 2022 collection, we witnessed the return of gloves. Whether in cotton, silk, voile or latex matters little, this trend is back to set our hearts racing.
Above all, the influence of media successes such as TV series, including Bridgerton and The Crown, has brought gloves, the must-have accessory and symbol of etiquette, back into fashionable life. The use of gloves in costume dates back to the 17th century, but they saw increased popularity especially in the 19th century, worn by the ladies and elite of the time. We know different types, distinct especially in terms of length, suitable for different occasions. Perfect in more or less elegant and glossy contexts, gloves are back on the catwalk in Paris, during the haute couture week for summer 2022.
Many icons of the past have made this accessory emblematic and a symbol of their wardrobe. Among the many who used gloves were the very refined Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, then Lady Diana Spencer who wore them during her formal phase. Later, the People’s Princess chose to hang up the glove, opting for bolder looks capable of narrating a personal change through fashion.
