THE HISTORY OF LOAFERS
The Powhatan, a Native American tribe, were among the first to wear footwear very similar to modern moccasins. They were precisely called “makasin,” or “shoe” in their language. In the early 20th century these shoes would begin to achieve greater popularity, worn by Norwegian sailors and farmers. However, it would be Nils Gregoriusoon Tveranger, a very young shoemaker, who after opening a workshop in the Norwegian town of Aurland would develop a model based on the work moccasins of local sailors. Known as Aurland moccasins they were exported to Europe and North America and are still to this day considered the first official model in the history of this footwear.
Moccasins are a beloved shoe for men and women, for the latter an excellent alternative to work shoes far removed from typical high heels. The success of loafers is also due to the movie stars who especially during the 1950s and 1960s influenced the way of dressing of the most important youth subcultures of that time.
