New York Fashion Week has been underway for a few days now, and many designers have taken to the catwalks of the New York scene. Among them also Tory Burch, the internationally renowned designer, what is the story behind her imagery for the Spring/Summer 2023 collection?
Tory was born in Pennsylvania but immediately moved to New York to pursue her career, immediately starting work as a designer for Ralph Lauren, Narciso Rodriguez and Vera Wang. Soon afterwards, she created her own world, her own fashion house, in 1997.
The inspiration for Spring/Summer 2023 stems from an almost ethereal minimalism, clean lines and a sober colour palette, with the same and special attention paid to the materials used. This Ready-to-Wear collection by Tory Burch identifies new luxurious fabrics designed to allow our bodies to move more fluidly, while maintaining a particular classy allure.
The designer seems to want to aim for innovation in a minimalist key, while trying to play with accessories in bolder colours and shapes. Even the footwear seems to want to stand out, the shoes almost seem to become surrealist works destined to be remembered.
There is a fundamental reference to Claire McCardell, to the easy ideals of a designer who in the mid-1900s opposed uncomfortable high fashion. Tory Burch in fact wrote the preface to the re-edition of a book by McCardell, the two seem to have much in common. Tory Burch has in fact talked a lot about this over the years. Her particular vision of everyday, easy-to-wear fashion was described by Claire McCardell as a way of ‘liberating’ women.
Very popular in this Spring/Summer 2023 collection are the volumes, a particular and interesting overlapping of garments not always of the same texture. Then the denim, especially on the trousers, which the designer chooses strictly high-waisted, faded and embellished with accessories at the waist.
